Skills Training

The girls are loving being a part of their family at home playing games as well as learning important life skills. As a starting point, we decided to use part of the yard for the girls to learn to grow maize and a few vegetables.

James grew up farming and has a passion for the process. He is enjoying teaching the girls these critical skills.

They are learning about cultivation, fertilizing, and recognizing the needs of the vegetables by their physical appearance.

The maize is coming along strong, the tassels will soon be forming and then we will begin to see the maize come on.

Every girl is able to do a part of the process. The older girls are being taught to hoe the weeds, and the younger girls are able to help with the removal and are able to get in next to the roots and help directly fertilize the stalks.

James is truly helping these girls to learn critical life skills that will impact them forever.

Additionally, this is just the first phase of the farming and gardening skills we are teaching. Over this next year we are looking to expand the size of the ground we will be working on – we will then be using the larger plots to help teach skills in the community. This will benefit the families as well as WellSpring.
