Marvelous is one of the students being supported by Wellspring in educational initiatives. He is a dedicated and passionate student who values education and strives to make a positive impact in his family. Despite facing significant challenges, his commitment to education is evident through his life experiences and proactive approach toward learning.
The following is his testimony he would like to share with you,
“My name is Marvelous, and I reside in Kawama East, Mufulira. I am currently a grade 11 student at Adult Mufulira Skills Training School. Previously, I attended Kalanga School; however, due to the long distance, I decided to transfer this term. At my previous school, I would finish classes at 4 pm and walk 4 kilometers home, often without having eaten anything, which was challenging. In contrast, my new school dismisses us at 1 pm, and the walk is only 2.3 kilometers, making it much more manageable.
Unfortunately, my father abandoned our family, and my mother relies on temporary work as a maid to provide for us. As a result, we often struggle to have enough food, typically having only one meal a day. I am grateful for Wellspring, which has been assisting my family with essential school supplies, including a school bag, books, a uniform, shoes, and other study materials. They have also supported my two younger sisters, Micah and Annie Nsonga, by educating them at the Rescue House. When school ends, I look for any temporary work to help my mother with household responsibilities. With my mother’s income of only K500 per month ($20.00), it is difficult for us to make ends meet.
I appreciate my new school, Adult Mufulira Skills Training School, as it accommodates a diverse range of students and offers various skills training classes, including plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, motor mechanics, tailoring, and food catering services. The school also provides a center for high school classes, where my current class has 65 students, compared to 130 in my previous school at Kalanga Secondary. This smaller class size allows me to better understand the material and ask questions; previously, we had to sit on the floor or blocks due to a shortage of desks, making learning challenging. I am confident that after completing high school, I will be well-prepared for any skills training as long as I achieve good grades.
My mother played a crucial role in facilitating my transfer from Kalanga to Adult Mufulira Skills Training School. I am now performing well academically and am preparing for my upcoming exams, with end-of-term tests scheduled for next week. I have dedicated significant effort to my studies. My sincere request is for Wellspring to continue supporting me with past examination papers, study materials, and a new uniform and shoes. Currently, I have just one pair of shoes, which I recently received from Wellspring, and having at least two pairs is essential for daily use. Since my recent school transfer, my uniform no longer fits properly as it was obtained from friends, and my old trousers are unsuitable. Assistance from Wellspring in acquiring a new uniform would be a tremendous blessing.”
