A Celebration Of Independence

In Zambia, the 24th of October is commemorated as Independence Day. The WellSpring Team took the opportunity to celebrate this significant occasion. The team dedicated time to educate the girls about the concept of freedom, the celebration of independence and its importance. They also studied the seven presidents who have led Zambia to date, as well as their histories and tenures. This historical context is integral to the education curriculum for students in Zambia.

The children and the team enjoyed the experience as they shared insights into Zambian culture, heritage, and poetry. A communal supper was also shared. The teachers presented on the following topics:

  1. Misheck: The Importance of Independence, the History of Zambia, the rationale behind celebrating this day, the meaning of Independence, and the leadership of Zambia prior to independence.
  2. Clara: The historical account of Zambian presidents, familial backgrounds, years of leadership, and related details.
  3. James: The significance of the colors on the Zambian flag—red, green, orange, black—and the symbol of the Eagle, along with information regarding the flag’s creator.
  4. Naomi: The interpretation of the symbols on the Zambian coat of arms, including the two figures, the embankment, the pick and hoe, and the green color, among others.
  5. Joyce: A discourse on the history of the Copperbelt, specifically focusing on Mufulira Town, including its establishment, the meaning of ‘Mufulira,’ its recognition, and the town’s current population statistics.

This event marked the inaugural occasion at WellSpring and is vital as it imparts the values of our beloved nation to the children and future leaders. This day is one of the most important national holidays celebrated in Zambia, akin to America’s Independence Day. The Zambian government typically utilizes this day to honor the nation’s heroes, civil servants, government officials, and others for their remarkable contributions during the past year and in preceding years.

Thank you for making this day and its celebration possible for the WellSpring family.
