A Note From Martha...

I am happy to be here because you are paying for my school, buying uniforms, and bags. We are also able to eat food freely. Am also sleeping on the bed, eating together with my friends.
I am saying thank you for the help you are giving to me and my friends. To my house mom I am so thankful because she teaches house chores and we pray together and go to church together.

Martha is the fifth of seven children in a family working hard to survive with very limited means. Both of her parents are alive, but life has been a constant struggle. Her father does not have a stable job—he takes on occasional labor when he can find it—while her mother sells vegetables by the roadside to help put food on the table.

Despite these challenges, Martha has shown determination in her education. She successfully completed Grade 7 and began Grade 8 in 2023. However, the family’s financial situation made it difficult to support her continued schooling.

Martha was accepted into WellSpring due to her vulnerability and the family’s inability to meet her educational needs. She is now receiving the support, stability, and encouragement she needs to thrive in school and pursue a brighter future.

Martha’s Story – As Told by Her Mother, Monica

My name is Monica, and I am the mother of Martha, a bright and determined 14-year-old girl. We live as a family in Kawama East. My husband Stephen is 50 and currently unemployed. I try to support our family by selling vegetables along the roadside, but what I earn is barely enough to survive. On a good day, I might make K15 to K20 (about $0.80 to $1.05), and sometimes I go home without selling anything at all.

Martha is in Grade 7 at Gasto Primary School. She works hard in school and hopes to pass her exams so she can continue on to Grade 8. But with our financial struggles, it has been nearly impossible to provide her with even the most basic school supplies—uniforms, books, or even enough food to help her focus. Some days, we manage one meal. Other times, we go without.

Often, I have to borrow vegetables on credit just to prepare a simple meal, then try to pay it back when I can. Life is very difficult, but I have always encouraged Martha to keep dreaming of a better future.

We are asking WellSpring to help Martha by accepting her into the rescue home. With the right support, she can continue her education, grow in a safe and stable environment, and one day break free from the cycle of poverty that has held our family back for so long. Thank you for giving girls like Martha a chance to hope.
